FAQs

When is CMC’s Alternative Spring Break?
CMC’s Spring Break is March 12-19, 2016.  The Alternative Spring Break trips will leave campus either Saturday, March 12 or Sunday, March 13, depending on the trip. Trips will return to campus by Saturday, March 19, 2016 (some trips may return earlier). Student participants have the option to travel back to campus, or can make arrangements to travel home or elsewhere for the remainder of the break.

How many trips are there and where are they going?
This year we are offering 3 ASB trips. Read about all of them on the 2016 Trip Locations Page!

How many students can participate in the trips?
We plan to select up to 12 students per trip.

Who can participate in CMC’s ASB trips?
All currently enrolled CMC students, undergraduate and graduate, are welcome to apply. However, this program is only open to students in residence in Claremont for the Spring semester. Applications are subject to review by the Office of the Dean of Students, in addition to the ASB committee composed of staff and faculty.

How much do the ASB trips cost?
Student contribution for ASB trips is $300, which covers transportation, lodging, most meals and programming expenses. Additionally, students will need to bring personal spending money.

Are scholarships available?
Yes! If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please email Amy Bibbens, Director of the CCE.

Do I need to have experience with the Center for Civic Engagement to apply?
No, you don’t have to have any experience with the CCE.

What makes ASB an Alternative to the traditional college spring break?
The Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program through CMC’s Center for Civic Engagement will promote community engagement, provide a cultural exchange opportunity, develop leadership skills and personal growth, and foster strong bonds among the team. Alternative Spring Break trips are substance-free trips, even for students of legal age to consume alcohol. This substance-free policy highlights each volunteer’s commitment to community engagement, and helps maintain an active, engaging volunteer environment for all participants.

I’ve already visited the 2016 Trips Page. How can I learn more about the trips?
The Trip Blogs will be updated as more information becomes available. You can also submit additional questions through the Contact form on the ASB site.

How do I apply?
Visit the Application page to learn about the process. Application forms are due Monday, January 25. A $50 deposit is due at the time of application (turn your deposit in at DOS). If selected, this deposit will be applied towards the total trip cost. Otherwise, the deposit will be returned to you.
